Here We Go!

I’ve never written a blog before. Truth be told, I never really written much of anything. Sure I’ve written plenty of work related reports and memos clarifying this and that or asking for more information about this, that or the other. When it comes to this type of writing, I am a pro: sequential, clear, concise, and to the point. I take pride in that. Just about anyone can pick up and fully understand an RFI (Request For Information) I’ve written explaining and detailing a problem we’ve run into on a job (I’m a carpenter working in commercial construction) along with possible solutions that I recommend. It sounds easy but in all honestly painting a clear picture of a situation that demands very fine detail is sometimes rather difficult. A picture speaks a thousand words, for sure (so I often make use of them), but sometimes another few hundred are needed to fully understand the picture. I’m sure this is all very interesting to you (Not!) but discussing communication between architects, engineers and tradesmen is hardly the reason I’m writing tonight. As I said before, I’ve never really written much of anything and by that I mean I am very inexperienced at using written word as a means of expressing my innermost thoughts and feelings. I want to change that.

I, like most of you, have an opinion on just about everything. You name the same subject and informed or not, we’ve all got our opinion, right? So what makes me think anyone would want to hear my lousy opinion? What makes my two cents worth listening to? Good question.

Well, I like to think that I do a pretty good job at keeping my opinions to myself until I’ve had time to examine the evidence presented me and ponder the subject matter from several vantage points. I like to build a case supporting the opinion I’ve formed and then do my best to poke holes in that case so it no longer holds water. I continue to do this in a cyclical process until (hopefully) I reach a point at which I find what I believe to be (Dun-dun-DUN!) the truth. When I finally do voice my opinion it isn’t a case of my mouth moving faster than my brain. It is the result of my reasoning to the best of my ability. What’s more, I do not consider the case closed once I leaned one way or another. I am more than happy to alter my opinion in light of new evidence or insight as it becomes available to me. Furthermore, I am far from a simpleton and have been praised for my intellect throughout my life. I kind of have to cringe at making that last statement because life teaches us that the ones who speak loudest about their intelligence are most likely the dumbest of all. That being said, I will be the first to tell you I am no genius and while at various times in my life I would have liked to think of myself as such, I have come to grips with the fact “above average” intelligence would probably be the most accurate label for me. (Please don’t judge my intelligence by my typos because, boy! do I have a lot!) I mention these things about myself because they are the things I am seeking in you and are the reason that I am here. I am here because I am seeking the truth through conversation and interaction with people of reasonable intelligence who are thoughtful and rational. From what I seen thus far, that is what WordPress is a community of; thoughtful, rational, reasonable people.I look forward to posting my thought a=on various matters and interacting with you all.
